Car accidents can cause serious injuries in Connecticut

After being in a car accident, a person may feel a wide range of emotions. First, he or she may feel relieved to still be alive. However, when this person looks at his or her body, it quickly becomes apparent that permanent damage has been done. This causes the person to feel distraught and angry, particularly if the person who caused the accident was under the influence of alcohol in Connecticut. When these types of car accidents happen, the injured victim can rightfully file a personal injury claim against the driver seeking financial damages for treatment of the injuries and other costs connected to the debilitating accident.

In one recent case in Connecticut, a man who was 22 years old was charged with drunken driving and vehicular assault following a two-vehicle collision. The accident happened on Interstate 287. The man was driving east but drifted out of his lane and rear-ended a vehicle that was parked on the shoulder of the road, police said.

The vehicle that was struck hit a guardrail and spun into the center of the interstate. Two people in this vehicle suffered injuries and were transported to the hospital. The car that struck it rolled upside down. One passenger in this vehicle suffered a skull fracture and internal injuries; he lost his ear and a section of his scalp. Meanwhile, another passenger in the vehicle lost his thumb and index finger as a result of the accident, according to authorities.

The man who police say caused the accident will have to face criminal charges. However, he may also have to deal with lawsuits from the injured victims, seeking reimbursement of monetary damages stemming from the collision. Car accidents are a likely result of drunk driving because alcohol impairs a person's judgment and coordination skills. The charges that the driver faces could be used to establish liability in personal injury claims in a Connecticut civil court.
