Do you know the signs of nursing home abuse?

No one wants to think their loved ones will be harmed in a nursing home, but neglect and abuse are all too common. It is often difficult for nursing home residents to speak up about these issues. Make sure you know what to look for so you can prevent or stop nursing home abuse.

Many issues can lead to neglect and abuse in nursing homes. Some of the most common problems are understaffing, overcrowding, lack of supervision of staff and residents, negligent treatment and failure to follow a doctor's orders. When these conditions are prevalent in a long-term care facility, it is easier for abuse and neglect to occur.

If you notice any of the following symptoms affecting a family member or friend in a nursing home, they may be suffering abuse or neglect:

  • Withdrawing from others
  • Excessive crying
  • Fearful reactions
  • Bedsores
  • Fractures
  • Bruises or cuts
  • Overmedication
  • Restraint injuries
  • Dehydration or malnutrition
  • Reverting to infantile behavior

What should you do if you suspect neglect or abuse? Report it to the nursing home and then speak with a lawyer. The nursing home may or may not cooperate fully with you. However, if you have an attorney as your advocate, you will have someone who will investigate the case on your behalf.

In addition to getting justice for your loved one, you may also seek compensation from the nursing home. Because each case is unique, it is best to discuss yours with a lawyer to learn more.
