The kitchen tools that are most apt to injure you

If someone were to ask you what the most dangerous object in your kitchen is, you’d likely mention a knife. While researchers with the home improvement website Porch confirmed that knives are indeed the most dangerous object in our kitchen, plates take second place. There are many other hazardous items that can be found in this room as well.

Researchers at Porch combed through data published by the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System to hone in on the most dangerous kitchen tools. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) emergency room data revealed that at least 320,000 people visited the hospital in 2017 after being injured by a knife.

Tableware, such as plates, serving trays and bowls, caused the second highest number of injuries. At least 90,000 individuals were seriously hurt by these in 2017. Many of the injuries were caused by individuals handling items that were too hot. Others suffered serious lacerations when they were cut by them.

The researchers determined that glassware caused the third highest number of injuries in 2017. At least 56,000 emergency room visits that year were caused by someone either dropping a glass or jar on their feet or by it shattering and cutting them.

What many would expect to be some of the most dangerous kitchen items were actually quite safe in comparison to those that made the top three on the list. Food grinders, deep fryers, pressure cookers, electric mixers and corkscrews each resulted in less than 3,500 emergency room visits in 2017.

There are a few different entities involved in getting a product to market. A designer decides how a product will look and function. A manufacturer produces the item according to specifications. A marketer champions how you, the consumer, may benefit from purchasing it. They’re also responsible for placing any warning labels on it. The distributor gets the product on store shelves.

Designers sometimes fail to thoroughly test a product to make sure it’s safe. Manufacturers frequently produce defective items. Marketers neglect to mention that a tool is only safe in certain situations. People often get hurt by kitchen products because of negligence such as this.

If you’ve been hurt by a household appliance in your New Haven kitchen, then you should consult with an attorney. They can advise you of legal avenues that you can pursue in Connecticut if you’ve been seriously injured.
