Driving a car requires attention, but operating a large and heavy one can demand even more attention. But this is not always the case with all the trucks you come across. Some are being driven by drivers who are too tired to focus on driving.
So, what causes truck driver fatigue:
1. Lack of sleep
Truck drivers should get adequate sleep to be alert when driving. A driver who gets behind the wheel when feeling drowsy may have a reduced reaction time.
Truck drivers who drive long distances should take time to rest before continuing with the journey. Many trucking companies have two drivers on such long routes. This way, one can rest, while the other takes over.
2. Depending on alertness tricks
Instead of resting when feeling tired or sleepy, some truck drivers use “alertness” tricks to keep driving. Examples of these tricks are smoking, drinking coffee, turning the music on or opening the window. Unfortunately, these tricks only work for a few minutes or can lead to other effects.
For example, opening the window can only keep a driver awake for a few seconds; in the long run, fatigue will take over. Besides, while drinking coffee can keep a truck driver awake, consuming high amounts can affect their general sleep habits, which can be unhealthy.
3. Medications
Some medications cause drowsiness/dizziness. If a truck driver takes such medications, they are likely to feel tired behind the wheel, or worse, fall asleep.
A truck driver may make mistakes that cause them to be fatigued, such as failing to take the required breaks. Or their employer may be responsible for their fatigue, for example, a trucking company with unrealistic expectations/schedules.
